Following Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football, head coach Lionel Scaloni has announced Cristian Gabriel "Cuti" Romero as the new captain of the Argentina national team.

Intense discussions had been ongoing regarding who would shoulder the leadership of the Albiceleste following the end of the Messi era. That speculation has finally been put to rest with the appointment of Romero as captain.

The coaching staff of Argentina had already planned to hand the captaincy to the 28-year-old central defender. According to TyC Sports, citing Gaston Edul, Scaloni and his associates had made this decision months ahead of the World Cup.

Following the retirements of Messi and Nicolás Otamendi, it was widely expected that the armband would pass to Romero. This reliable defensive star has been one of the most vital members of Argentina's recent golden era.

Romero made significant contributions to winning the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, and the Qatar World Cup title.

Now, the defender—who currently plays for Atlético Madrid—has the opportunity to prove his capabilities in on-field leadership as well.

As the new captain, Romero will be supported by experienced goalkeeper Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez and other key teammates. With their collaboration, Argentina is set to embark on a new footballing cycle.
