HC issues rule to probe prepaid meter scam

Many consumers are complaining that users of prepaid electric meters have to pay extra charges and hidden charges. The High Court has issued a rule for an impartial investigation into the allegations. The concerned have been asked to respond to the rule.

On Tuesday (June 11), The HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon issued the rule after hearing a writ petition.

On May 21, a legal notice was sent to the defendants demanding urgent review and audit of electricity billing practices, transparency, refund of excess charges, communication with the public and policy reforms.

According to the notice, prepaid electric meters have been introduced in Bangladesh. It has been announced that all electricity users will be brought under it by 2025.

Despite the introduction of prepaid electric meters, consumers have to pay extra charges and hidden charges; There is a lack of transparency in the electricity bill collection system. Consumers are facing many inconveniences. This has caused widespread dissatisfaction. These issues need to be reviewed and reformed.

The problems have caused widespread dissatisfaction and financial hardship. But no action has been taken yet.
