Government employees and officials are set to enjoy an extended seven-day holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr, as the Cabinet has officially declared (March 18) Wednesday a public holiday.

The decision was finalized during a Cabinet meeting held Thursday at the Bangladesh Secretariat, presided over by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

With the addition of March 18 to the holiday calendar, the formal vacation period will now run continuously from March 17 to March 23.

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education, Bobby Hajjaj, confirmed the move to reporters following the session, noting that the extension is intended to streamline the massive exodus of people traveling from urban centers to their hometowns.

The government’s primary objective is to alleviate the intense traffic pressure and logistical challenges typically associated with the country’s largest religious festival.

By providing a mid-week bridge holiday, officials hope to ensure a smoother and safer journey for millions of citizens heading home to celebrate with their families.
