Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has described the 1969 Mass Uprising as a pivotal chapter in the history of Bangladesh’s struggle for self-determination and independence.

He made these remarks in a message issued on Friday (January 23), ahead of "Mass Upsurge Day," observed today, Saturday (January 24).

A Legacy of Resistance
The Chief Adviser highlighted the historical progression of the nation's struggle, noting that the Great Independence was achieved through the Liberation War, built upon the foundation of:

  • The 1952 Language Movement
  • The Historic 6-Point Movement
  • The subsequent 11-Point Movement
  • The 1969 Mass Uprising

"The entire month of January 1969 was turbulent with protests against the then-autocratic misrule and oppression," Dr. Yunus stated. He recalled how the spontaneous participation of students and professionals turned the movement into a "mass explosion" on January 24.

Honoring the Martyrs
Dr. Yunus paid tribute to those who defied the curfew and sacrificed their lives in the face of police firing, specifically naming:

Matiur Rahman Mallik: A 9th-grade student of Nabakumar Institute.

Makbul, Anwar, Rustam, Milon, Alamgir, and many others.

He emphasized that these sacrifices have provided "endless courage and inspiration" to the youth of today, drawing a direct parallel to the July Mass Uprising and other democratic struggles.

A Call for a Democratic Society
In his message, the Chief Adviser urged the nation to remain respectful of the values born out of the 1969 movement.

He concluded by praying for the eternal peace of the souls of all martyrs who gave their lives for the country’s liberation.
