Police have arrested Lieutenant General (Retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, the former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) reportedly took him into custody from his Mirpur residence late Wednesday night (March 25).

Investigations suggest that Lieutenant General (Retd) Mamun Khaled played a central role in politicizing the DGFI and was a primary architect of the "Aynaghar" secret detention centers.

He is also accused of orchestrating staged militancy narratives, embezzling hundreds of crores through corruption in the Jolsiri Housing Project, and illegally amassing thousands of crores by abusing the influence of Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

In May last year, a court issued a travel ban against Mamun Khaled and his wife, Nigar Sultana Khaled, following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The ACC informed the court that an investigation is ongoing regarding allegations of illegal share trading, abuse of power, financial embezzlement through various irregularities, and the acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income.

Investigators noted a high risk that Khaled and his family might attempt to flee the country to evade justice.

Sheikh Mamun Khaled served as a Director of the DGFI from December 2007 to December 2010, and later held the position of Director General from June 23, 2011, to March 7, 2013.

Critics and victims allege he played a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining the "fascist" infrastructure of the Sheikh Hasina administration over the past 15 years.
