The Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Md. Asaduzzaman, has announced that a 17-member committee will be established to oversee constitutional amendments.

He shared this during a session of the National Parliament on Wednesday afternoon (April 29).

The Law Minister stated that the special committee will consist of 17 members: seven from the ruling party and five from independent and other parties. He urged the opposition to submit five names for their representatives by Thursday.

He further explained that an initial list of 12 members has been prepared in accordance with Rule 266 of the Rules of Procedure of Parliament.

This list includes representatives from the BNP, Gono Adhikar Parishad, Ganosamhati Andolan, Bangladesh Jatiya Party, and independent members. Among these 12, seven are from the BNP and five from other political parties.

The Law Minister noted that since the opposition represents approximately 26% of the House, five names have been requested from their side.

If the opposition provides these names, the full 17-member committee can be finalized.

He expressed hope that once the names are submitted, the proposal for the committee's formation can be presented the following day, allowing work to proceed on constitutional reform in light of the "July Charter."

The Speaker confirmed that a list of 12 members from the treasury bench is nearly finalized and reiterated the request for five names from the opposition.
