In the absence of the opposition parties, the Constitution Reform Committee is finally holding its inaugural meeting with its current 12 members.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 12:00 PM today, Tuesday (August 4), in the cabinet room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban (National Parliament Building). Committee President Salahuddin Ahmed will preside over the session.

Committee member and Chief Whip of the Parliament Nurul Islam Moni told the media that the first meeting will feature introductory discussions, and the specific agenda will be known following the conclusion of the session.

According to Parliament Secretariat sources, the opening day's proceedings may remain limited to introductions and setting the topics for subsequent meetings, with substantive discussions on constitutional amendments expected to begin from the second meeting.

On July 13, a 12-member special committee for constitutional reform was formed under the chairmanship of Salahuddin Ahmed. Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni formally proposed the committee in parliament, which was subsequently passed by a voice vote.

Although an initial initiative was taken to form a 17-member committee, it was reduced to 12 members after the opposition parties declined to submit names.

Five positions remain vacant for the opposition; however, neither Jamaat-e-Islami, the Jatiya Nagorik Party, nor Khelafat Majlis—representing the opposition in parliament—has submitted any names to the committee thus far.

During the formation of the committee in parliament, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni stated that in accordance with Rule 266 of the Rules of Procedure and upon the Prime Minister's directives, an initiative was undertaken to form a constitutional reform committee comprising members from all political parties, alliances, and independents represented in the parliament. He noted that although discussions were held with opposition leaders who assured they would provide names during the current session, the process was delayed as those names have yet to be submitted. Consequently, a 12-member committee was moved, leaving five slots open for opposition inclusion if they choose to submit names later.

The members of the committee are: Chief Whip Mohammad Nurul Islam, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Md. Asaduzzaman, State Minister for Land and Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Mir Helal Uddin, State Minister for Social Welfare Farhana Sharmin, BNP MPs Zainul Abedin, Shakila Farjana, and Mahmudul Haque Rubel, Ganos সংহতি Andolan MP Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) MP Barrister Andaleeb Rahman Partho, Gono Odhikar Parishad MP Nurul Haque, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh MP Md. Oliullah.
