The newly elected President of the United Nations General Assembly, Khalilur Rahman, has stated that it may not be possible to resolve all the world's problems quickly and in a friendly environment.

However, there will be no shortage of effort in trying to solve them. He made these remarks on Tuesday after assuming office as the President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

Earlier, at the UN Headquarters in New York, the concluding session of the 80th UN General Assembly and the formal swearing-in ceremony of Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the newly elected President of the 81st session, took place.

The new President of the UN General Assembly said, "I am not naive enough to think that all problems will be resolved quickly and amicably. There are some issues that will remain unresolved. There are some matters that will take time for us to find solutions to. That does not mean we will not try to reach coexistence wherever we can. I will continuously keep trying to do that."

Highlighting that the cooperation of member states is most crucial, Khalilur Rahman said,

"I believe that if the member states work together, my job will become easier."

He also assured initiatives to advance the proposals put forward by UN Secretary-General António Guterres regarding the reform of the global body.

He expressed hope to engage various segments of people, including civil society, business groups, and academics, with the work of the United Nations.

In response to a question on how the Rohingya sheltered in Bangladesh can have representation at the UN when they currently have no representation, Khalilur Rahman stated that previously, serving as the High Representative for Rohingya Affairs to the head of the Bangladesh government, he witnessed the situation firsthand. He also witnessed their suffering and the urgency of their return home.

Notably, in 1986, Humayun Rashid Choudhury, a former foreign secretary and politician from Bangladesh, served as the President of the 41st session of the UN General Assembly. He held the position of UN General Assembly President while concurrently serving as the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh after entering politics, and later became the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad.
