Student killed during quota reform protest in Rangpur

One student of Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) in Rangpur was killed during a clash between police and the quota reform protesters at the university entrance this noon.

The incident took place on Tuesday (May 16) at around 2:30 pm.

The deceased has been identified as Abu Sayeed, 25. He was a student of the English Department of the university.

The quota protesting students of Rokeya University went towards the campus from Lalbagh area of the city with a procession. When they tried to enter the campus, they were stopped by police. As a result, protesters clashed with the police. Police fired rubber bullets at the students. Abu Sayeed, a student of the 12th batch of BRUR English department, was killed in the attack.

Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Moniruzzaman said, 'Students of different schools, colleges and other educational institutions joined the quota protesters. They clashed with the police. Many policemen were injured. I heard that someone died, I can't say how he died.'
