The death toll has risen to seven in a bus accident in the Bakhunda area of Faridpur, where a local bus lost control, hit an electric pole, and overturned into a roadside ditch. At least 30 others were injured in the incident.
The accident occurred around 11:15 am near the Sharif Jute Mill when a 'Faria Paribahan' bus, en route to Faridpur from Muksudpur via Nagarkanda, crashed into an electric pole and overturned into a roadside ditch.
The deceased have been identified as Md Joar Sardar (58), his son Iman Sardar (35), Fazirun Nessa (60), Shraban Hasan (40), Azibur (43), Bharoti Sarkar (40), and Dipa Khan (34).
According to eyewitnesses, the speeding bus lost control while trying to overtake another fast-moving vehicle. Local residents rushed to the scene to assist, rescuing injured passengers and sending them to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Fire service teams later arrived and pulled several victims from under the overturned bus, confirmed Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Senior Station Officer at the Faridpur Fire Service.
Assistant Superintendent of Highway Police Masud Alam stated that the initial investigation suggests reckless driving was a factor in the crash.
In response to the tragedy, Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Md. Kamrul Hasan Molla announced that the families of the deceased would receive immediate compensation of Tk 25,000 from the local administration. Additional one-time financial aid will be provided later through BRTA.
A five-member investigation committee, headed by the Additional District Magistrate, has been formed to probe the incident. Authorities have assured that necessary actions will be taken based on the committee’s findings and recommendations.
