Newly appointed Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) Commissioner Mahbubur Rashid has said the police are working to uncover the clue of the quadruple murders in the city last week and bring those involved to justice.  “It is our responsibility to find answers of all the questions surrounding the murders. Further action will be taken after analyzing the information and evidence found in the investigation,” he said. He said this while talking to reporters after visiting the scene of the murder at Machhuapara area today (Friday). The Police Commissioner said he has come to visit the scene considering its significance and investigation into the sensitive case is going on seriously.  “Our goal is to collect all evidences and bring everything to light and submit charge sheet to the court to ensure justice,” he said. All necessary technical and intelligence support is being taken for investigation, he said adding “If you give us any new clues, we will surely investigate. They were identified as Mugdha Das, 23, son of Kanu Das and Siddhartha Das, 19, son of Binoy Das of the Machhuapara area. Police said the arrested persons gave confessional statements under Section 164 before Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Detective Branch (DB) has been entrusted with the investigation of the case and OC of the RpMP's Detective Branch Zeenat Ali has been appointed as the new investigation officer. Responding to a question, the Police Commissioner said that drugs were not just a problem of Rangpur.  “It’s a problem of the country and right now, it’s a social problem.” he said adding he already sat with the officials on this issue and gave them time to combat it.

A collective funeral prayer was conducted on Friday for seven victims of the Riyadh sofa factory blaze who hailed from Naogaon district.  The religious service took place at the Molla Azad Memorial College grounds located in Atrai upazila at approximately 10:15 am.  Following the prayers, the remains were handed over to the mourning relatives, who transported them back to their respective native villages for final interment. This came after the mortal remains of nine Bangladeshi nationals who lost their lives in the Saudi Arabian factory catastrophe landed at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 4 pm on Thursday.  Out of those nine returned victims, seven belonged specifically to Atrai upazila in Naogaon.  A total of 16 Bangladeshi workers tragically died when a fierce fire ripped through a sofa manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia on August 9. Read More Rangpur Family of Four Killed on Rooftop in Broad Daylight: Police With active backing from local administrative bodies, the coffins were brought to Atrai at roughly 1:30 am on Friday.  Kept inside hearses, the bodies stayed stationed on the grounds of Atrai Police Station until dawn broke. The deceased individuals were formally identified as Md Farid, son of Moin Uddin from Udonpai village; Rubel Pramanik, son of Saidur Rahman; Mohan Ali; Sumon Ali; Kalimuddin, son of Bazlur Rahman; Sohel Rana, son of Badal Tarafdar from Dubai village; and Abdul Jalil Sardar, son of Tamez Uddin Sardar from Parkasunda village. The funeral congregation was attended by Naogaon-6 Member of Parliament Sk Md Rejaul Islam, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Saiful Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Monirul Islam, Atrai Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Moniruzzaman, Atrai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam, alongside numerous local community members. Lawmaker Rejaul noted that the grieving households had already received financial assistance granted through the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board. “The government will continue to support the families.  The process of bringing the remaining bodies back to the country is also underway,” he stated.

Retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife and their two children were killed on the open rooftop of their house in broad daylight, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said on Thursday.  He disclosed the new information at a press briefing around 10 am, citing statements allegedly made by the accused before a court. According to Commissioner Mabud, Ganapati went to the rooftop for his morning walk on the day of the incident and found accused Siddhartha Das (23) and Mugdha Das (19) there. When Ganapati scolded them, the two allegedly strangled him with a gamcha (towel). Hearing Ganapati’s screams, his wife Pritilata and daughter Parthi Chakraborty came to the rooftop, where the accused also allegedly strangled them, the commissioner said. Police said the bodies of the two women were later dragged towards the rooftop staircase. Commissioner Mabud said the accused had gone to the rooftop to take yaba, as the walls and a water tank provided them with privacy. He said Siddhartha told the court that the two had consumed eight yaba tablets that night, which was more than they had ever taken before. “They did not realise that dawn had broken,” the commissioner said, quoting Siddhartha’s statement. After killing the three family members on the rooftop, the accused allegedly entered Ganapati’s room, where his 12-year-old son Priyam was sleeping. Police had previously said the child was attacked while asleep. However, according to Siddhartha’s statement before the court, Priyam woke up, saw him and asked, “Siddhartha dada, why are you here?” Police said the accused then strangled the child with a piece of cloth to prevent him from raising an alarm. Mabud said investigators are also examining two possible motives behind the killings. On Monday, the investigation was transferred from Kotwali police to the Detective Branch of Rangpur Metropolitan Police.

The investigation into the gruesome quadruple murder of a retired teacher and three members of his family in Rangpur has been transferred from Kotwali Police Station to the Detective Branch (DB) of police for a more intensive probe. "The investigation has been transferred to DB for a more intensive investigation into the case of four murders and speedy charge sheeting," Sanatan Chakraborty, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DB) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP), told a local media on Tuesday. Inspector Md Zinnat Ali, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of RpMP’s Detective Branch, has been appointed as the new Investigation Officer (IO) of the murder case, which was filed with Kotwali Police Station on Sunday. The initial IO of the case, Inspector (Investigation) of Metropolitan Kotwali police station Milan Chatterjee, came to the DB office on Monday afternoon and handed over all case documents to the new IO.  Following the handover, both investigation officers visited the crime scene at the home of teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel in Machhuapara, under Ward No 24 of Rangpur City Corporation area, where the former IO briefed Inspector Ali on the progress and findings of the investigation so far. Police arrested two neighbours in connection with the crime, identified as Mugdha Das (23) and Siddhartha Das (19) both residents of the city's Machhuapara area.  On Sunday night, the two accused gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Md Rafiqul Islam. After recording their statements, the court sent both Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das to jail. Reaffirming the focus of the ongoing probe, DC (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty told the media that case IO Inspector Zinnat Ali has officially taken charge and has already initiated the DB's investigation.

All four members of a family found dead at their home in Rangpur city on Saturday were strangled to death, and the disfigurement of their faces was caused by natural decomposition rather than a chemical substance, forensic experts revealed on Monday. The clarification was provided by Dr. Babul Kumar Biswas, an assistant professor at the forensic medicine department of Rangpur Medical College Hospital, following his completion of the autopsies. The victims have been identified as Ganapati Chakraborty alias Jewel (65), a former teacher at Rangpur Zilla School; his wife Pritilata Chakraborty (50); their daughter Parthi Chakraborty Agami (25); and their son Priyam Chakraborty Ayush (12), a Class-V student at Rangpur Zilla School. Dr. Babul confirmed that there were no signs of chemical burns on the bodies. "When a body decomposes, exposed areas outside the clothing can sometimes turn dark. This is part of the decomposition process," he told a local media over the phone on Monday afternoon.  He explained that the dark appearance of the victims' faces was caused by changes in blood and body tissues during decomposition and not by any chemical treatment.  "The faces did look dark but there were no signs of chemical burns," he added, noting that while there were some minor injuries that may have resulted from a struggle, nothing else significant was found. Four members of a family, including a former schoolteacher, were killed at their home in Rangpur city after they reportedly objected to two young men consuming Yaba on their rooftop, police said on Sunday. The victims were identified as Ganapati Chakraborty alias Jewel (65), a former teacher of Rangpur Zilla School; his wife Pritilata Chakraborty (50); their daughter Parthi Chakraborty Agami (25); and their son Priyam Chakraborty Ayush (12), a Class V student at Rangpur Zilla School. Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud shared details of the murders during a press conference at his office on Sunday morning following the early morning arrest of two suspects.  The arrestees were identified as maternal cousins Mugdha Das (23) and Siddhartha Das (19). According to police, officers recovered the bodies from different locations in the house, located in the city's Machuapara Mandir area, around 11:30 pm on Saturday.  One body was found on the rooftop, two on the terrace, and another inside a room. Mabud stated that Mugdha and Siddhartha accessed the rooftop of Ganapati’s house via an adjacent building on Thursday night to consume Yaba. Hearing noises, Ganapati went upstairs and caught the duo taking the drugs. When he objected, the two suspects allegedly strangled him with a 'gamcha'. Hearing her husband's screams, Pritilata tried to go upstairs but was killed on the staircase, the police commissioner said.  The suspects then killed the daughter, Parthi, and finally 12-year-old Priyam. Mabud explained that Priyam knew the suspects and was a friend of Siddhartha’s younger brother, Apurba.  Fearing the child could identify them, the suspects killed him as well. Following the killings, the two suspects remained inside the house, where they allegedly took showers, ate dates, and consumed more Yaba.  They left the premises during Jummah prayers the following day while the streets were relatively quiet. A breakthrough occurred when investigators found a gold bangle at the scene showing signs of a fire test.  This led police to learn about Siddhartha’s background as a goldsmith. Police detained Siddhartha and Mugdha early Sunday morning, during which both confessed to their involvement. Siddhartha has reportedly worked as a goldsmith at PK Pal Jewellers for about eight years, while Mugdha works at a fish shop in the city’s City Bazar. The looted jewellery was subsequently recovered from an abandoned location based on information provided by the suspects.  Additionally, two mobile phones belonging to the family were found submerged in detergent-mixed water, which police said was done to destroy evidence. Investigators also gathered evidence of Yaba consumption, date seeds, and a partially eaten cucumber from the scene.  The date seeds have been submitted for DNA testing. Mabud noted that Mugdha and Siddhartha had consumed Yaba at another location in the city before moving to Machuapara, where they took the drug again.  Police have also identified a suspect named Khushi alias Prashanta as the alleged Yaba supplier and are verifying the lead. A murder case has been registered at Kotwali Police Station.  Police confirmed they are working to conclude the investigation and submit the charge sheet to the court as quickly as possible.
