Tension has spread across Dhaka University (DU) campus following the stabbing death of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Shahriar Alam Samya in Sohrawardy Udyan, adjacent to the university.
The physician on duty at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead after he was taken there in a bloody condition around midnight on Tuesday (May 13).
Later, around 2:00 AM, a team led by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Detective Branch (DB) of Ramna Division conducted a raid in Sohrawardy Udyan and detained five individuals.
Earlier, Shahriar Alam Samya, a student of the 2018-19 session at the Institute of Education and Research of Dhaka University and the literary and publication secretary of Sir A F Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal, was riding his motorcycle past the Mukta Mancha on Tuesday night when it collided with an outsider biker.
Following an argument and scuffle, Samya was repeatedly stabbed. He was later rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced him dead.
In protest against this murder, university students gathered in front of the residence of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed late at night and brought out a protest procession across the campus. At this time, other students also expressed solidarity and participated in the demonstration.
