A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Sudip Chakroborthy, an associate professor at Dhaka University (DU), on a three-day remand in connection with a case involving the alleged abetment of suicide of his student, Munira Mahjabin Mimo.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Manjurul Islam issued the order after police produced the accused in court and requested the three-day period for further interrogation.
Sudip Chakroborthy, who teaches in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, was arrested by police in the city’s North Badda area on April 26.
Following his initial arrest, he was sent to jail the next day.
The case stems from the discovery of Munira Mahjabin Mimo’s body in her rented flat in Badda on the morning of April 26.
Her remains were subsequently moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for an autopsy.
According to the case documents, investigators recovered a handwritten note from the scene.
Furthermore, the victim’s WhatsApp messages reportedly suggested the existence of an intimate relationship between the student and the teacher.
The victim’s father has formally alleged that the associate professor instigated his daughter to take her own life, leading to the current legal proceedings.
