The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, a predominantly Muslim territory situated in the southern Philippines, conducted its inaugural parliamentary elections on Monday, marking a vital milestone in the protracted pursuit of self-governance following decades of armed rebellion and conflict.

The autonomous territory was established pursuant to a 2014 peace accord whereby the principal Muslim insurgent faction relinquished its objective of securing an independent Islamic state within the southern reaches of the predominantly Catholic nation in exchange for expanded regional autonomy, alongside commitments from the group's 40,000 combatants to disarm and transition into civilian society.

Commission on Elections Chairman Erwin Garcia announced that Cotabato City has been placed directly under the commission's operational authority, with an administrator designated to take charge following a late Sunday shooting incident that claimed three lives and left 15 individuals wounded.

Additional security disturbances in the city included an improvised explosive device detonation that injured the carrier, as well as a separate gunfire incident that resulted in no casualties.

Similarly, the municipality of Maluso in Basilan has been placed under direct commission control following the discovery of pre-marked ballots across 36 of the 68 local polling precincts. Garcia stated that he promptly mandated the reprinting of ballot papers for the impacted areas, where polling activities will consequently face postponement.

Dating back to the 1970s, approximately 150,000 fighters and civilians have lost their lives in the southern Philippines, leaving the nation's most impoverished territory severely underdeveloped.

Western and Asian capitals had long harbored concerns that the persistent insurgencies could cultivate fertile ground for Islamist radicalism across Southeast Asia, as Mindanao previously served as a stronghold for networks linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State prior to a joint Philippine-US military offensive that diminished militant capabilities.
