The Indian government has decided to temporarily repatriate the family members of Indian diplomats and officials stationed in Bangladesh as a precautionary security measure.

Sources within the Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the development late Tuesday night (January 20).

However, it was emphasized that the High Commission in Dhaka and other consulates across the country will remain open and fully functional.

Rising Tensions and Security Concerns
According to Ministry sources, relations between Bangladesh and India have experienced intermittent periods of tension following the change of government in Bangladesh on August 5.

Specific security concerns were also highlighted regarding recent developments involving the Indian Premier League (IPL).

India noted that Bangladesh's decision to ban the broadcast of the tournament, while citing safety concerns for its players, contributed to the current assessment of the environment.

"In light of the evolving security situation, we have advised the families of officials working in our missions and posts to return to India as a precautionary step," a Ministry source stated.

Diplomatic Operations Continue
Despite the withdrawal of family members, officials clarified that this decision will not disrupt India’s diplomatic operations in Bangladesh.

Essential staff will remain on-site to ensure that the High Commission and representative offices continue their regular activities.
