The Indian Parliament will pay tribute to the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Begum Khaleda Zia, on Wednesday. Tributes will be offered during the proceedings of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Sources have confirmed that the homage will take place on the opening day of the 2026-27 Budget Session in both houses.

Members are expected to observe a minute of silence in recognition of her status as a leading political figure in Bangladesh and her significant presence in South Asian politics.

Khaleda Zia, who served three terms as Prime Minister, passed away at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on the morning of December 30, 2025.

Budget Session Kick-off
The Budget Session is set to begin with President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of Parliament. The session is scheduled for 30 sittings over a 65-day period, concluding on April 2.

A recess will begin on February 13, with proceedings resuming on March 9 to allow standing committees the opportunity to review the demands for grants from various ministries and departments.

Khaleda Zia’s decades-long political career significantly impacted Bangladesh’s governance and its diplomatic relations within the region, including with India. This tribute highlights India’s tradition of honoring influential regional leaders.
