U.S. President Donald Trump is "seriously" considering military strikes against Iran in response to the government's violent crackdown on protesters, according to a report by The New York Times on Sunday (January 11).

Senior officials have reportedly briefed President Trump on potential strike options. While the President has not yet made a final decision, sources indicate he is weighing the possibility of ordering military action with significant gravity.

An American official, speaking to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity, stated that multiple plans have been presented outlining where and how the U.S. could strike. These options reportedly include targets involving civilian infrastructure.

Previously, The Wall Street Journal reported that should the President give the order, the U.S. might launch large-scale airstrikes specifically targeting Iranian military infrastructure.

Escalating Unrest in Iran The Iranian security forces have maintained a hardline stance against anti-government protesters.

Following intense demonstrations on Thursday night, thousands took to the streets again on Friday and Saturday.

Reports of indiscriminate firing on protesters surfaced Friday night. Medical staff at three separate hospitals told the BBC that their facilities are "overflowing" with the dead and wounded.

The violence has claimed lives on both sides; at least 14 members of the Iranian security forces have been reported killed in the clashes so far.
