A series of shootings across Clay County, Mississippi, has left at least six people dead, including a seven-year-old girl. Authorities have confirmed that a 24-year-old suspect is in custody following the rampage.

According to reports from NBC News, the shootings occurred late Friday night (January 9) across three separate locations in the West Point area, near the Alabama border.

Authorities stated that six individuals lost their lives in the attacks. While the official identities of all victims have not been broadly released, it has been confirmed that several were relatives of the suspect.

The 24-year-old suspect, identified by local officials as Daricka Moore, was apprehended shortly after the incidents.

Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott expressed the gravity of the event on Facebook, writing, “Unfortunately tonight we have dealt with a horrific tragedy in our community.”

He noted that this was one of the most difficult cases in his 30-year career.

Sheriff Scott further confirmed that the suspect is in custody and there is no ongoing threat to the public. In a statement, he added, “I ask that you lift our victims and their families in your prayers.

Law enforcement is busy investigating and will release an update as soon as possible.”

Investigation Details The investigation reveals that the violence spanned multiple sites, including residences on David Hill Road and Blake Road.

Local prosecutors have indicated that because of the nature of the crimes, they may seek the death penalty as the charges are upgraded to capital murder.
