U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a sharp warning to Iran regarding the collection of tolls from vessels navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
During a press conference on Monday (April 6), the President asserted that Iran would not be permitted to levy such charges, suggesting instead that the United States might take over that role.
When asked by a reporter if he would agree to a system where Iran collects tolls in the strait, Trump replied, "I won't let Iran take tolls. We’ll take them instead. Why shouldn't we? We’re the victors. We won."
Analysts suggest that any move by the U.S. to directly collect tolls in the waterway would necessitate a significant increase in American military presence and control over the region.
The "One Night" Ultimatum
During the same briefing, President Trump escalated his rhetoric, warning that Iran could be "obliterated in one night" if it fails to agree to a deal within a specified timeframe. Trump set a deadline of 8:00 PM (Washington D.C. time) on Tuesday (April 7).
"The whole country could be decimated in one night," Trump stated. "And it could happen as soon as tomorrow night."
The President claimed that Washington has presented Iran with an "acceptable deal proposal" currently under consideration by Iranian leaders.
Iran Rejects Temporary Ceasefire
Tehran has responded firmly to the threats, stating they will not accept any temporary ceasefire.
Iranian officials maintained that any potential agreement must be based on a permanent cessation of hostilities and must include compensation for damages incurred during the conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz remains the world's most vital oil transit chokepoint. With a vast portion of the world's crude oil and gas passing through the passage, the escalating tension poses a significant risk to global energy markets and international security.
