A Dhaka court on Monday has rescheduled the submission of the investigation report for the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi to February 9, 2026.
This marks the 123rd extension granted in this long-running case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam issued the new date after the prosecution filed a time petition, as the investigation agency once again failed to submit its findings by Monday's deadline.
The case dates back to February 11, 2012, when Sagar and Runi were brutally killed in their West Rajabazar residence.
The couple’s four-year-old son, Mahir Sarwar Megh, was present in the flat at the time of the incident. Following the murders, Runi’s brother, Nawser Alam, filed a case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The investigation has seen multiple shifts in responsibility over the last 14 years. It began with the Detective Branch (DB) before being transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). RAB held the investigation for over 12 years, failing to submit a report despite receiving 111 extensions.
In a significant development on September 30, 2024, the High Court intervened, removing RAB from the case and ordering the Ministry of Home Affairs to establish a high-powered task force.
This four-member committee, led by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) as the convener, was formed on October 23, 2024, and has been tasked with concluding the investigation within six months.
