Sagar-Runi Murder Case: Court Sets July 22 for Probe Report Submission

A Dhaka court on Thursday rescheduled the submission date for the investigation report on the sensational double murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi to July 22.

This marks the 127th extension of the deadline in this long-running case.

The report was originally due for submission on this day, but the investigation officer failed to file it before the court.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam fixed the new timeline today (Thursday), according to Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam Russell, the officer of the court's General Registration Branch for Mirpur Model Police Station.

The tragic incident occurred on February 11, 2012, when the journalist couple was brutally murdered in their rented apartment in the city's West Rajabazar area.

The crime took place in the presence of their four-year-old son, Mahir Sarwar Megh. Following the murders, Runi's brother, Nawser Alam, filed a case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

The probe has undergone several institutional shifts over the last fourteen years. Initially, the investigation was entrusted to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). It was subsequently transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

However, RAB failed to submit the final investigation findings despite securing time extensions on 111 separate occasions over a 12-year period.

Amid stagnant progress, the High Court intervened on September 30, 2024, directing the Ministry of Home Affairs to form a high-powered task force to take over the probe, effectively removing RAB from the responsibility.

HC Orders State Counsel for Death-Row Convicts

In compliance with the court's directive, the Home Ministry constituted a four-member task force on October 23, 2024, mandating it to investigate the double murder and submit its findings within six months.

Most recently, on April 26, 2026, the High Court granted this specialized task force an additional six months to complete the investigation and formally submit its report on the killing of the journalist couple.
