Former DGFI Director Afzal Naser Arrested in Dhaka

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested Md. Afzal Naser, a former director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), in connection with a case stemming from the July-August 2024 movement.

Naser was apprehended early Monday morning from a residence in the Mirpur DOHS area of the capital. 

According to DB Joint Commissioner (North) Rabiul Islam Bhuiyan, the former intelligence official has been shown arrested in a case filed with the Mirpur Police Station.

Afzal Naser served as a director of the DGFI from March 2006 to March 2008. During his tenure, he was allegedly involved in the custodial torture of high-profile political leaders and businessmen.

This arrest follows a series of high-profile detentions of former military and intelligence officials.

On March 26, detectives arrested the former Director General of the DGFI, Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, from Mirpur. 

Previously, on March 24, former army officer and Feni-3 lawmaker Lt. Gen. (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury was picked up from his Baridhara DOHS residence in connection with a human trafficking case filed at Paltan Police Station. 

Both Khaled and Masud have already been placed on multi-day remands in their respective cases.
