A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to the former Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, in an attempted murder case stemming from the July mass uprising in 2024.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain issued the bail order on a bond of Tk 50,000, citing the former Speaker’s gender and physical illness as primary considerations.
According to Public Prosecutor M. Omar Faruq Faruqi and court sources, there are no further legal barriers to her release as she is not currently shown arrested in any other cases.
Dr. Chaudhury had been in custody since April 7, following her arrest in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.
The case involves an incident on July 18, 2024, in Uttara’s Azampur Bus Stand area, where a man named Ashraful, also known as Fahim, sustained a bullet injury to his left eye during the student-led protests.
Ashraful later filed a case naming 25 individuals, including Dr. Chaudhury, alongside 120 unidentified suspects.
A veteran figure in the Awami League, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury served as the Member of Parliament for Rangpur-6.
She was first elected as the nation's Speaker on April 30, 2013, after her predecessor, Abdul Hamid, was elected President.
She held the position for over a decade until resigning on September 2, 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5.
