Decades after the assassination of former President Ziaur Rahman, retired army officer Mozzafar Hossain—who was taken into custody 45 years after the incident—is now preparing to face prosecution before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
Sources within the tribunal confirmed that prosecutors have formally filed a petition requesting that Mozzafar be shown arrested in connection with a case currently before the bench.
A judicial hearing regarding this application is slated to proceed at the tribunal on Tuesday.
Mozzafar was apprehended last Thursday following intelligence derived from a recorded conversation involving former military officer Masud Uddin Chowdhury.
Subsequent to his arrest, law enforcement personnel escorted Mozzafar to the exact location where President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated to conduct initial procedural reviews.
The legal pathway for the case comes amid differing procedural frameworks.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed previously indicated that individuals implicated in the Zia murder investigation would be tried through a military court system.
However, prosecution officials clarified that preparations are fully complete to formally arrest and try Mozzafar before the tribunal on charges concerning crimes against humanity, confirming that a formal investigation into the allegations against him is already underway.
