27 Critical Bearing Pads Defective, Cracks Found in 46 Pillars of Metro Rail

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has announced that 27 defective bearing pads along the Uttara-to-Motijheel metro rail route in the capital have been identified as critical.

He also stated that cracks of varying degrees have been found in 46 piers (pillars) of the metro rail.

The minister provided this information on Wednesday, September 9, in response to a starred question from Cumilla-9 Member of Parliament Md. Abul Kalam during a session of the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament).

MP Md. Abul Kalam had asked the minister whether, according to an independent audit committee report, 23.28 percent—or 730—of the bearing pads and 46 pillars along the Uttara-Motijheel metro route were found to be defective and cracked.

He also inquired about the steps taken by the government in the public interest to resolve these issues and ensure safe passenger travel if the information was correct.

In his reply, Sheikh Rabiul Alam stated that out of the 730 defective bearing pads, 147 defects have been classified as minor, while 297 stem primarily from the workmanship involved in their installation.

Only 27 defective bearing pads have been marked as critical.

Additionally, cracks of varying magnitudes were identified across 46 piers in accordance with the independent safety audit committee's report.

Detailing the government's steps to resolve the issues and secure passenger safety, the minister noted that Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) formed the "Safety Audit Report Recommendations Implementation Committee" on July 16 to ensure the timely and effective execution of the safety audit committee's suggestions.

This committee has already initiated measures to implement the panel's immediate recommendations.

The minister further explained that steel brackets have been installed at 10 locations where bearing pads are prone to displacement.

Settlement markers have been installed at 27 spots to measure bearing pad settlement, and a program has been undertaken to replace all 27 critical bearing pads by November 30, 2026.

He added that the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is being appointed as a structural consultant to assess the risks and determine repair strategies for the 46 cracked pillars.

Structural crack gauges are being installed at 102 locations to measure and monitor structural fissures, with installation scheduled for completion by October 31.

Waterproofing work in substation rooms across all stations is also progressing rapidly.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam further informed the parliament that live tests for emergency rescue operations and control room coordination during power outages have been successfully completed to prevent future passenger inconveniences.

522 Arrested, 25 Cases Filed in Capital in 24 Hours

In regular operations conducted across various areas of the capital, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 522 people over the past 24 hours. During this period, 25 cases were filed over various offenses. Md. Aktar Hossain, Deputy Police Commissioner of the DMP's Media and Public Relations Division, confirmed this information on Sunday (August 30). According to DMP sources, those arrested include 51 from the Ramna division, 38 from Lalbagh, 48 from Wari, 64 from Motijheel, 76 from Tejgaon, 168 from Mirpur, 34 from Gulshan, and 43 from the Uttara division. Additionally, the Detective Branch arrested one person. The drives led to the recovery of 4,054 pieces of Yaba tablets, 346 grams of marijuana, 100 grams of gold, two knives, and nine mobile phones. One victim was also rescued during the same operations. The DMP stated that these drives were carried out to curb crime and maintain a normal law and order situation across various police station areas in the capital. Along with the recovery of narcotics and various pieces of evidence, the perpetrators were apprehended. Legal processes are underway to take action against the arrestees under relevant laws.

'Pink Bus' Coming to the Capital: Female Drivers and Conductors Too

A special "Pink Bus" service is set to be a new addition to public transport in the capital. Initiated by the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), these buses will not only serve passengers but will also have women serving as drivers and conductors. As part of the implementation of the BNP government's election manifesto, this special bus service will be officially inaugurated tomorrow, Tuesday (August 18), in Tejgaon, capital. The information was provided in a press release sent by BRTC Public Relations Officer Mostakim Bhuiyan on Sunday (August 16) evening. According to the release, the inauguration of the "Female Bus Service Operation" will take place at 10:00 AM on Tuesday at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot premises in Tejgaon. The BRTC stated that this initiative has been undertaken as part of implementing the current government's election manifesto. In this special bus service, women will perform duties as drivers and conductors. The buses will be pink in color. Through this initiative, specialized services for women in the capital's public transport are being introduced, while also creating opportunities for women's participation in bus operations. Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping Sheikh Rabiul Alam will be present as the chief guest at the event organized tomorrow, August 18, at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot premises in Tejgaon to inaugurate the "Female Bus Service Operation." State Minister for Railways and the Road Transport and Highways Division Habibur Rashid and Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division Dr. Mohammad Ziaul Haque will attend as special guests. The event will be presided over by BRTC Chairman Abdul Latif Molla. Stakeholders expect that this initiative will introduce specialized bus services for women in the capital's public transport and further increase women's participation in professions like bus operations.
