Bus Catches Fire in Mohammadpur Due to Mechanical Fault

A bus caught fire in the capital's Mohammadpur area. According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, the fire broke out due to a mechanical fault on Tuesday night (September 15).

The Fire Service reported that upon receiving news of the fire, a unit from the Basila Fire Station rushed to the scene and successfully brought the fire under full control.

No casualties were reported in this incident, and the overall situation in the area is currently normal.

Meanwhile, on the same night, a cocktail explosion occurred near Jagannath Hall at Dhaka University (DU) at around 10:45 PM. No casualties were reported immediately following the incident.

The explosion triggered panic in the area. Law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene upon receiving the information and brought the situation under control.

Earlier on Tuesday, around 1:15 PM, another cocktail exploded in front of the Chief Justice's entrance at the Supreme Court.

However, police personnel on duty at the spot could not immediately identify who had hurled the cocktail and fled.

Shortly before that, around 12:15 PM on Tuesday, International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced seven defendants from the banned Awami League and its affiliated organizations to death in a case concerning crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.

The three-member judicial panel headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury delivered the verdict.

The convicts sentenced to death are the general secretary of the banned Awami League Obaidul Quader, joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League president Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and general secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, as well as banned Chhatra League president Saddam Hossain and general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.

Arguments in the case concluded on August 18, after which the tribunal kept the case awaiting judgment.

Subsequently, September 15 was scheduled for pronouncing the verdict after fixing the date on September 14.

According to sources related to the case, all seven convicts sentenced to death are currently fugitives.

522 Arrested, 25 Cases Filed in Capital in 24 Hours

In regular operations conducted across various areas of the capital, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 522 people over the past 24 hours. During this period, 25 cases were filed over various offenses. Md. Aktar Hossain, Deputy Police Commissioner of the DMP's Media and Public Relations Division, confirmed this information on Sunday (August 30). According to DMP sources, those arrested include 51 from the Ramna division, 38 from Lalbagh, 48 from Wari, 64 from Motijheel, 76 from Tejgaon, 168 from Mirpur, 34 from Gulshan, and 43 from the Uttara division. Additionally, the Detective Branch arrested one person. The drives led to the recovery of 4,054 pieces of Yaba tablets, 346 grams of marijuana, 100 grams of gold, two knives, and nine mobile phones. One victim was also rescued during the same operations. The DMP stated that these drives were carried out to curb crime and maintain a normal law and order situation across various police station areas in the capital. Along with the recovery of narcotics and various pieces of evidence, the perpetrators were apprehended. Legal processes are underway to take action against the arrestees under relevant laws.

'Pink Bus' Coming to the Capital: Female Drivers and Conductors Too

A special "Pink Bus" service is set to be a new addition to public transport in the capital. Initiated by the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), these buses will not only serve passengers but will also have women serving as drivers and conductors. As part of the implementation of the BNP government's election manifesto, this special bus service will be officially inaugurated tomorrow, Tuesday (August 18), in Tejgaon, capital. The information was provided in a press release sent by BRTC Public Relations Officer Mostakim Bhuiyan on Sunday (August 16) evening. According to the release, the inauguration of the "Female Bus Service Operation" will take place at 10:00 AM on Tuesday at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot premises in Tejgaon. The BRTC stated that this initiative has been undertaken as part of implementing the current government's election manifesto. In this special bus service, women will perform duties as drivers and conductors. The buses will be pink in color. Through this initiative, specialized services for women in the capital's public transport are being introduced, while also creating opportunities for women's participation in bus operations. Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping Sheikh Rabiul Alam will be present as the chief guest at the event organized tomorrow, August 18, at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot premises in Tejgaon to inaugurate the "Female Bus Service Operation." State Minister for Railways and the Road Transport and Highways Division Habibur Rashid and Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division Dr. Mohammad Ziaul Haque will attend as special guests. The event will be presided over by BRTC Chairman Abdul Latif Molla. Stakeholders expect that this initiative will introduce specialized bus services for women in the capital's public transport and further increase women's participation in professions like bus operations.
