Morocco’s dream of lifting the trophy on home soil ended in heartbreak as Senegal emerged victorious in a dramatic and controversial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
A lone goal by Pape Gueye in extra time secured a 1-0 win for the defending champions, silencing the home crowd.
Dramatic Late-Game Controversy
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the match headed into stoppage time, where chaos erupted. In the final minute of the eight minutes added, Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty following a VAR review, ruling that Senegal defender El Hadji Malick Diouf had fouled Brahim Díaz inside the box.
The decision sparked furious protests from the Senegalese squad, with most players temporarily walking off the pitch. The tension spilled into the stands as some fans threw chairs and other objects.
The Turning Point
After a nearly 30-minute delay, play resumed for the penalty. Real Madrid winger Brahim Díaz stepped up but attempted a weak "Panenka" chip that failed miserably.
Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy easily caught the ball, revitalizing the Senegalese team.
Just four minutes into extra time, the breakthrough arrived. Idrissa Gana Gueye won the ball in midfield and found Pape Gueye. The Villarreal midfielder struck a clinical shot into the net, stunning the 50,000+ home supporters.
Post-Match Reactions
Goalscorer Pape Gueye celebrated the victory with pride:
"We gave everything; we didn't cheat. It was a very difficult match, but we were determined to win. Senegal are the champions of Africa, and we are very happy."
While the Morocco coach congratulated the opponents, he expressed disappointment over the chaotic scenes:
"Congratulations to Senegal. However, what happened on the field after the penalty decision is disappointing for the image of African football."
A Continued Drought for Morocco
Morocco had a final chance to equalize and force a penalty shootout in the second half of extra time, but Nayef Aguerd’s header struck the crossbar.
The defeat extends Morocco's 50-year wait for an AFCON title.
With this victory, Senegal claims their third title in three years, cementing their dominance as the giants of African football since 2022.
