In a thrilling display of tactical resurgence, Morocco has become the first team to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament, defeating Canada 3-0 in a commanding Round of 16 clash.
After weathering a dominant Canadian onslaught in the first half, the "Atlas Lions" unleashed a clinical offensive performance in the second half to seal their victory.
A Tense First Half
Despite the goalless first-half scoreline, Canada initially controlled the tempo, applying high-intensity pressure that kept the Moroccan defense on high alert.
Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was instrumental in keeping his side in the game, pulling off a brilliant save in the 6th minute to deny Jonathan David, followed by another spectacular stop against Tani Oluwaseyi in the 12th minute.
Morocco suffered an early setback in the 22nd minute when Ismael Saibari was forced off the pitch due to an injury, replaced by Soufiane Rahimi.
Following the hydration break, the North African side began to find their rhythm, managing their first shot on target in the 30th minute through Rahimi.
The tension escalated toward the end of the half, resulting in a flurry of yellow cards for both sides, including Achraf Hakimi and Richie Laryea, as the teams entered the break locked at 0-0.
Second-Half Dominance
Morocco emerged from the interval a transformed side. In the 50th minute, they capitalized on a well-drilled free-kick routine; a quick pass from Achraf Hakimi found Azzedine Ounahi, whose low strike from outside the box maneuvered through a crowded defense to find the back of the net.
Canada attempted to force an equalizer, but Morocco’s defensive line, anchored by the reliable Bounou, remained impenetrable. As Canada pushed forward, Morocco exploited the gaps on the counter-attack.
In the 82nd minute, Ounahi struck again, doubling his tally with a clinical finish after Brahim Díaz held off two defenders to provide the assist.
Morocco’s dominance continued as Soufiane Rahimi, who had previously hit the crossbar with a header, finally added his name to the scoresheet in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
Receiving a precise pass from Díaz, Rahimi sprinted down the left flank to deliver a low strike, finalizing the 3-0 scoreline.
Key Performers
Azzedine Ounahi was named the Player of the Match for his two-goal heroics, while the tactical impact of substitute Soufiane Rahimi proved pivotal in Morocco's second-half surge.
With this victory, Morocco moves forward, buoyed by a performance that showcased their ability to adapt under pressure and execute deadly counter-attacking football.
