Barcelona defeated Bilbao 1-0 at the historic San Mamés stadium on Saturday night (March 7).

A Night of Defensive Resilience
For much of the match, the Catalan giants were pushed to the limit. Playing in front of a raucous home crowd, Athletic Bilbao appeared the sharper side, creating several goal-scoring opportunities. However, Barcelona’s goalkeeper Joan García delivered a masterclass between the posts, keeping the hosts at bay with a string of spectacular saves.

Flick’s Tactical Gamble
Recognizing the physical toll of a congested fixture list—including a recent Spanish Cup semi-final exit at the hands of Atlético Madrid—Barcelona coach Hansi Flick opted for significant rotations. Star players Raphinha, Pedri, and Robert Lewandowski started on the bench to manage fatigue, while the squad was already missing Jules Koundé, Alejandro Balde, and Frenkie de Jong due to injuries.

This experimental lineup struggled to find its rhythm in the first half, as Bilbao dominated possession and looked more likely to break the deadlock.

The Breakthrough
Seeing the game slip away, Flick introduced his heavy hitters—Raphinha, Pedri, and Lewandowski—midway through the second half. The impact was instantaneous.

In the 68th minute, Pedri delivered a sublime pass to Lamine Yamal. The young Spanish forward cut inside from the right wing and unleashed a perfectly weighted left-footed curler into the top corner of the net. The wondergoal silenced the San Mamés faithful and proved to be the decisive moment of the match.

League Standings
With this victory, Barcelona sits firmly at the top of La Liga with 67 points from 27 matches. Although Real Madrid won their fixture 2-1 against Celta Vigo on Friday, they remain four points adrift of the leaders. Athletic Bilbao remains in 9th place with 35 points.
