Barcelona took a significant step toward defending their La Liga crown on Saturday night, securing a gritty 2-1 comeback victory against Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano.

A late strike from Robert Lewandowski proved decisive in a match defined by high stakes and intense tactical battling.

The win moves the Catalan giants to 76 points from 30 matches (25 wins, 1 draw), maintaining a firm lead over second-placed Real Madrid, who sit on 69 points.

First-Half Fireworks
The match began with early pressure from Barcelona. In the 2nd minute, João Cancelo set up Lamine Yamal, whose shot from a tight angle was blocked.

Marcus Rashford tested Atlético keeper Juan Musso with a free kick in the 7th minute, while Barcelona’s Joan García was called into action shortly after to deny Antoine Griezmann.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 39th minute by the hosts. Giuliano Simeone timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap, latching onto a lofted ball from Clément Lenglet before slotting it past the goalkeeper to give Atlético the lead.

However, the celebrations were short-lived. Just two minutes later, Marcus Rashford leveled the score.

The English forward surged down the left, played a neat one-two with Dani Olmo, and clinicaly finished into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 heading into the break.

Drama and the Decisive Blow
The second half opened with controversy when the referee initially showed Gerard Martín a straight red card for a challenge on Nahuel Molina.

However, after a VAR review, the decision was downgraded to a yellow card, sparing Barcelona from playing a man down.

Barcelona dominated much of the closing stages, with Yamal and Ferran Torres both coming close to finding a winner. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 87th minute:

  • João Cancelo cut past a defender and unleashed a diagonal shot.
  • Keeper Juan Musso parried the initial effort.
  • The rebound struck the chest of the well-positioned Robert Lewandowski and rolled into the net.

Redemption for Lewandowski
The goal served as a moment of personal redemption for Lewandowski. Just days ago, the veteran striker suffered the heartbreak of Poland’s exit from World Cup contention following a play-off loss to Sweden.

Coming off the bench in the 79th minute, his opportunistic finish ensured Barcelona took all three points.
