Tournament co-hosts United States continue to put on a stellar performance in the ongoing World Cup.
Following a consistent run in the group stage, the American footballers brought their best to the knockout rounds, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2–0 to secure their place in the Round of 16.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side dominated the first half of the match, which took place on Thursday morning (July 2, Bangladesh Time).
The US team remained well ahead of Bosnia in terms of both possession and attacking threats, though they had to wait until the final moments of the half to break the deadlock.
Striker Folarin Balogun handed the USA the lead in the 45th minute. Malik Tillman attempted a pass aimed at Balogun, which took a deflection off two Bosnian defenders before ultimately landing at the striker's feet.
The American forward made no mistake with the opportunity, beating goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj in a one-on-one situation to find the back of the net.
Bosnia fought back with more intent in the second half. Their chances improved when goal-scorer Balogun was shown a red card for a foul on a Bosnian player, leaving the US down to ten men. However, Bosnia failed to capitalize on the numerical advantage.
Instead, the USA doubled their lead in the 82nd minute when Malik Tillman scored directly from a brilliant free-kick, effectively sealing the victory for his side.
Although ten minutes of stoppage time were added to regulation time, neither team could alter the scoreline, resulting in Bosnia's elimination from this World Cup.
With this victory, the United States has reached the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time since 2002. The USA's most successful run in FIFA World Cup history remains their third-place finish in the inaugural 1930 tournament.
