Why not compensation to families of 13 child killed in gunfire: HC

The High Court has issued a ruling seeking to know why the families of 13 children who were killed in helicopter gunfire during the quota reform movement in government jobs will not be given compensation.

Thursday (August 15) Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Md Bazlur Rahman's High Court bench issued the rule.

Advocate Taimur Alam Khandakar appeared for the writ petition. Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman heard on behalf of the state.
Earlier, the High Court issued a ruling asking why the formation of an international commission of inquiry should not be ordered in the case of the shooting death of 13 children. The court has fixed September 5 for the next hearing in this regard.

On Wednesday (August 14), the division bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif heard the writ. Advocate Taimur Alam Khandakar appeared for the writ petition. Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman heard on behalf of the state. The judge then fixed today for the verdict.

In addition to investigating the 9 children killed on that day, compensation of 1 crore Tk is also said to be given to each family. Also, if any other child death is found later, he is also said to be covered under this compensation.

On August 1, Advocate Taimur Alam Khandakar filed the writ by collecting parts of various newspapers and magazines. The writ seeking formation of a 3-member inquiry committee was presented on August 4 before the bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon. They refused to accept the hearing at that time.

After that, the senior judge of the bench said the political issue should be settled in the streets. Later, the bench started the hearing of the writ against direct firing of the police on the protesters. which is dismissed outright.
