Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury has resigned from the post of Speaker of the National Parliament.

Bangabhavan sources confirmed that she submitted her resignation letter to President Md Sahabuddin on Monday (September 2).

Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury served as Speaker for three consecutive terms. She was elected as a Member of Parliament from Rangpur-6 Constituency.

Before this, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and left the country in the face of the student uprising on August 5. The President then dissolved Parliament. The interim government was sworn in on August 8.

According to the provisions of the constitution, in the context of the resignation of the Prime Minister and the dissolution of the parliament, the post of speaker was retained even though the previous government was dissolved.

Finally, after 27 days of the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury resigned.
