Bangladesh-India War Unlikely: Foreign Advisor
Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain firmly dismissed the possibility of a war between Bangladesh and India, attributing India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh's war preparedness remarks to internal matters within India, rather than any real threat to Bangladesh.
While Bangladesh was mentioned in Singh’s speech, Hussain clarified that Dhaka is more surprised than concerned, as there is no real threat of conflict between the two nations.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday (September 8) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Touhid Hossain emphasized, "I don't believe there is any chance of a war with India under any circumstances. We need to understand if this statement was meant for their own internal matters."
Hossain further expressed confusion over why Bangladesh was compared to situations like Ukraine or Hamas, adding, "I don’t see the relevance of such comparisons. We will examine why these comments were made, but I don’t want to overreact."
When asked about potential risks to Bangladesh, Hossain reiterated that he believes the statement was driven by India's internal dynamics.
On the topic of political asylum for Sheikh Hasina in India, he stated, “While any country can grant asylum, we will review the necessity of such a decision."
Touhid Hossain also touched on the UNHCR’s request to shelter more Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, stressing that the country cannot accommodate any more refugees.
Finally, he confirmed the finalized list of seven people, including himself, who will accompany the chief advisor on the upcoming UN visit.
