As Ramadan begins, the excitement of Eid shopping is already in full swing. From bustling street markets to upscale shopping malls, the festive atmosphere is evident. Many shoppers have chosen to complete their Eid shopping early to avoid the hassle of fasting while shopping, while others are browsing, comparing prices, or searching for their perfect Eid outfits within budget. With the increasing number of shoppers, markets and malls are becoming more crowded each day.
A Festive Shopping Experience
Eid is synonymous with new clothes and vibrant shopping sprees. Dhaka's busiest shopping hubs, including New Market and Gausia Market, have transformed into lively centres of activity. The energetic calls of vendors and the enthusiasm of shoppers fill these areas, creating a festive ambience.
A visit to popular shopping destinations—such as New Market, Gausia, Nurjahan, Badruddoza, Noor Mansion, Chandni Chowk, Eastern Mollika Complex, Green Sronika, Subastu, Chandrima Super Market, Dhanmondi Hawkers Market, and Elephant Road—reveals a dazzling display of fresh Eid collections. Fashion houses are stocked with newly designed panjabis, fatuas, sarees, salwar kameez, shirts, pants, T-shirts, and children's clothing, all featuring unique styles and trends.
Shoppers' Preferences & Market Trends
New Market remains a top choice for fashion-conscious young shoppers and students looking for trendy yet affordable clothing. Many are seen shopping not only for themselves but also for their families.
According to vendors, although Eid is still 25 days away, shopping has already gained momentum. They have noticed a steady flow of customers since the beginning of Ramadan and expect sales to surge as Eid approaches.
At Dhanmondi Hawkers Market, a shopper named Nikla shared her excitement about buying sarees: "This market feels like a kingdom of sarees. You can find every variety here. I've already bought sarees for my daughter and daughter-in-law, and I’m still looking around. Prices are always higher during Eid, but that's expected."
Popular Eid Fashion Choices
At Chandni Chowk Market's Kamal Fabrics, vendors noted that while no single clothing item is dominating demand this year, Pakistani brands like Aganoor, Sada Bahar, Tawakkul, Bin Said, and Organza Muslin, along with Indian dresses, are in high demand.
Given the hot weather, many shoppers are opting for lightweight, cotton clothing over extravagant, heavy outfits. Women's and children's clothing remain the most sought-after categories in the market. Meanwhile, men's fashion—including shirts, T-shirts, pants, and stylish Panjabis—is thriving in specific sections, such as New Market's third floor, Nurjahan Market's second and third floors, and Science Lab's surrounding areas. Additionally, jewellery, cosmetics, and street-side shops are experiencing a surge in customers.
Security Measures in Place
To ensure a safe shopping experience, Dhaka Metropolitan Police have deployed security personnel in key market areas. A police control room booth has been set up near Gausia Market, along with an information and service centre to assist shoppers.
As Eid draws closer, the excitement and energy in the markets are only expected to grow, making shopping a vibrant part of the festive celebrations.
