Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the interim government, is embarking on a three-day visit to China this week. The trip marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and China, making it a moment of significant importance. Speculation is growing that a major announcement could emerge during his visit.
On Sunday (March 23), China's Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, shared this information while speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He had earlier met with Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary, M Jasim Uddin, to discuss the visit.
"A major announcement may come during Dr Yunus's visit, as this year marks 50 years of diplomatic ties between our countries. We expect the visit to be productive and constructive," said Ambassador Yao Wen.
The visit has caught the attention of global powers, including the United States and India. When asked about this, the Chinese Ambassador responded, "This is a bilateral visit between Bangladesh and China. Our focus is on ensuring positive outcomes for both nations."
Bangladesh is also looking to deepen economic cooperation with China through this visit.
Diplomatic sources suggest that amid shifting regional dynamics and rising tensions with India, this visit holds significant geopolitical weight. Bangladesh is eager to strengthen trade ties with China, attract Chinese investments, and expand collaboration in key sectors such as healthcare, education, and water management.
Foreign Affairs Advisor Md Touhid Hossain recently stated, "Our priority is to elevate our friendly ties with Beijing, particularly by enhancing economic cooperation. We aim to attract more Chinese investments and expand Bangladeshi exports to China."
Dr. Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to depart for China on March 26.
