In a diplomatic communication issued on Monday (May 12), Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the meeting, which was slated for May 15 in Tokyo, has been deferred due to unavoidable circumstances. A new date will be set later, based on mutual convenience.

The Ministry also stated that the Japanese Embassy in Dhaka has been requested to convey the postponement to the appropriate authorities in Tokyo.

This development comes ahead of the expected visit of Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government, who is scheduled to travel to Japan later this month. During his visit, Dr Yunus is expected to participate in the Nikkei Conference and hold talks with the Japanese Prime Minister.

The May 15 meeting, had it taken place as planned, would have brought together the foreign secretaries of both countries to discuss a wide range of regional and global issues. Topics on the agenda included Japan's role in the Indo-Pacific, the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East, disarmament and international security, multilateral cooperation, and mutual support in various United Nations forums.

In addition, both sides were expected to review progress on several bilateral agreements signed in recent months.
