Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the BNP, has described "mob violence" as a savage frenzy that has become an enemy of humanity.
He made these remarks in a statement sent to the media on Wednesday (June 25), on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
Tarique Rahman emphasized the critical importance of the UN-declared International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. He noted its immense significance, stating that the day, observed annually on June 26, is dedicated to showing respect and solidarity with victims of torture.
He further stated in the release that despite subjugated nations gradually gaining independence immediately after World War II, violence and conflict have not ceased worldwide.
He said that a "blood-frenzy" seems to have perpetuated horrific conflicts and bloodshed in various countries, leading to countless deaths, injuries, and disabilities globally.
The acting chairman of the BNP highlighted that autocratic regimes in various states are carrying out severe oppression against their opponents with boundless rage.
In these countries, the lives and assets of citizens are under grave threat. Under the crushing dominance of dictators, those with opposing views face unspeakable imprisonment for years, including enforced disappearances, murders, and false accusations. He
claimed that Bangladesh has endured a terrifying Awami fascist misrule for nearly 16 years, with democracy held captive.
He stated that during the Awami fascist era, Bangladesh was transformed into an all-consuming state, where all forms of civil liberties, including freedom of expression, were suppressed. Freedom of the press was shackled by various draconian laws.
Tarique Rahman said that Begum Khaleda Zia, the BNP chairperson and symbol of democracy in Bangladesh, was unjustly imprisoned on false charges.
He alleged that the "barbaric Awami government mercilessly obstructed proper medical treatment" for the critically ill Khaleda Zia, who was undergoing treatment. He described the entire country as being silenced, enveloped in fear and apprehension.
He further added that if anyone protested the fascist government's undemocratic and intolerant behavior, "hired goons" would be unleashed.
He claimed that because the Awami government's "patronized terrorists" established a culture of impunity by uprooting humanity, the existence of ordinary people, including women and children, was imperiled.
He asserted that only in a democratic society are all human rights ensured, and while Bangladesh has been freed from fascism, the process of building democratic institutions and ensuring their proper practice has yet to begin.
In the statement, the BNP acting chairman said that "mob violence" has now emerged as a savage frenzy, becoming an enemy of humanity. He warned that it would jeopardize the environment for fostering a democratic culture.
To prevent the re-establishment of a "monocratic state," he stressed the need to make democracy dynamic and ensure its continuity.
He called for building a great tradition of humanity, justice, the rule of law, and free and fair elections, emphasizing that maintaining the unwavering unity of democratic forces is crucial for this.
He concluded by extending his sympathy to all victims of torture in Bangladesh and around the world on the UN-declared International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
He also called for an end to the various obstacles hindering victims from receiving justice.
Finally, Tarique Rahman stated that cruel torturers and dictators can only be defeated through the united efforts of all democracy-loving people worldwide, inspired by a sense of humanity.
