Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has suggested that a change in Bangladesh's government could lead to shifts in the country's relationship with India.
On Saturday (March 8), General Dwivedi addressed various regional security concerns, including Bangladesh’s political landscape and its impact on India, during an interactive session during the India Today Conclave in New Delhi.
Responding to a question about the strategic alliance between Pakistan and China, he stated, "The collaboration between these two nations is extensive, and we must acknowledge it. This means that the threat of a two-front conflict is now a reality."
During the discussion, he touched upon India’s military preparedness, lessons from ongoing global conflicts, the situation in Bangladesh, and issues related to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Line of Control (LoC).
When asked about Pakistan’s growing ties with Bangladesh, General Dwivedi remarked, "The epicentre of terrorism is rooted in a particular country, and it maintains relationships with some of our neighbours. This is a matter of concern because terrorism could be used as a tool from that region, which remains our primary security challenge."
However, he noted that it is "too early" to make definitive judgments about Bangladesh’s role in this dynamic. He acknowledged that political changes in Bangladesh could influence its relationship with India.
General Dwivedi also reaffirmed the strength of current military ties between India and Bangladesh, stating, "Our defense relationship is robust. We maintain regular communication to prevent misunderstandings and ensure clarity on both sides."
In conclusion, he emphasized the importance of regional stability, cooperation, and diplomacy, stating, "Armed conflicts are not in the best interest of any nation in this region. Our focus should be on adapting to the evolving situation and managing it diplomatically until a resolution is reached."
