US President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Iran have agreed to a "complete and comprehensive" ceasefire, the London-based British news outlet BBC reported.
Trump made the announcement late Monday (June 23) on his own social media platform, Truth Social.
In announcing the ceasefire, he stated, "If all goes well—which of course it will—I want to congratulate both nations."
Referring to the Israel-Iran conflict as the "12-day war," Donald Trump said the ceasefire would take effect "in approximately six hours," at which point both countries would gradually wind down their ongoing military operations.
While Trump's announcement indicated a gradual end to hostilities between the two nations, he specified that the conflict would be considered officially over "once 24 hours are complete."
In his declaration, Trump noted, "This was a war that could have lasted for years and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn't—and it never will."
According to the BBC report, the US President's statement described the end of this war as a significant humanitarian and diplomatic success.
Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based news outlet, reported that Trump's announcement is being viewed as a crucial development amid regional tensions.
However, despite US President Donald Trump's ceasefire declaration, neither Israel nor Iran has officially confirmed the ceasefire yet.
