The Appellate Division has officially included an appeal on its cause list seeking to upgrade the life sentences of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to the death penalty.
The case, involving crimes against humanity during the July Mass Uprising, appeared as item number 58 on the cause list for the Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court.
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecution filed the appeal, titled “Criminal Appeal No 96/2025: Chief Prosecutor vs Sheikh Hasina and another,” on December 15, 2025.
Based on eight specific grounds, the prosecution is requesting the court to enhance the current sentence of imprisonment until natural death to the death penalty for certain counts of crimes against humanity.
On November 17, the ICT-1, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, convicted both Hasina and Khan under the doctrine of superior command responsibility. Under the first charge, the tribunal found them guilty on three counts and sentenced them to imprisonment until natural death.
Under a second charge, they were found guilty on three additional counts and were already sentenced to death for those specific offenses.
The tribunal also convicted former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on the same charges.
However, he was sentenced to five years in prison, a leniency granted due to his full disclosure of events and his cooperation with the investigation as an approver.
Alongside the prison sentences, the tribunal ordered the state to confiscate all properties belonging to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
Furthermore, the authorities were directed to ensure that the families of those martyred or injured during the July uprising receive adequate compensation.
