Former IGP Mamun to be Charged with Genocide

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is set to be named an accused in multiple cases involving the Shapla Chattar killings and alleged extrajudicial killings, commonly referred to as "crossfires," during his tenure with RAB.

Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Aminul Islam, shared this information on Wednesday (April 15).

According to the Chief Prosecutor, orders have been issued to submit copies of First Information Reports (FIRs) from cases filed across various police stations nationwide regarding killings during the July mass uprising. To date, nearly 1,000 case copies have been submitted to the tribunal's investigation agency.

He further noted that the investigation agency has been directed to intensify its operations, with expectations that a significant portion of the process will be completed within the next week.

In a previous ruling regarding crimes against humanity during the July uprising, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were sentenced to death.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who was an accused in the same case, was sentenced to five years in prison after providing a statement as an 'approver' or state witness.
