Sheikh Hasina and 39 Others Charged in Mass Uprising Shooting Case

Police have officially filed a charge sheet in an attempted murder case involving the shooting of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist Sheikh Mohammad Ashik during the July-August Mass Uprising 2024.

The document names 40 individuals as accused, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Other prominent figures included in the charge sheet are former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Jahangir Kabir Nanak.

The list also features former lawmaker Sadek Khan and ward councillors Asif Ahammed and Tarekuzzaman Rajib.

Confirming the development to a local media, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution wing Deputy Police Commissioner Nasir Ahmed Hawalader stated that the charge sheet was submitted to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on May 1.

Regarding the next legal steps, Nasir Ahmed added, "The court is scheduled to hold a hearing on taking the charge-sheet into cognisance on May 13."

According to the case statement, the incident occurred on July 19, 2024, during the peak of the July uprising.

Protesters were demonstrating in the Mayur Villa area near the Mohammadpur Bus Stand when, at approximately 2:45 pm, they were allegedly attacked with batons and gunfire.

During the assault, Ashik was shot and collapsed on the road. The attackers reportedly left him lying there under the assumption that he had been killed.

Following the incident, Ashik filed the case with Mohammadpur Police Station on September 28, 2024.

While the final charge sheet focuses on 40 individuals, the original case named 129 people, including the ousted Prime Minister, along with 150 unidentified suspects.
