The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Sunday sentenced three former police officers to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising in 2024 in the capital’s Rampura area.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, also handed down a life sentence to one former officer and a 20-year prison term to another in connection with the violence that resulted in two deaths and two injuries.

The three individuals sentenced to death are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Assistant Deputy Commissioner of DMP Rashedul Islam and former Officer-in-Charge of Rampura Police Station Mashiur Rahman.

Additionally, the tribunal awarded life imprisonment to former Sub-Inspector Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan and a 20-year sentence to former Assistant SI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar.

This ruling marks the fifth judgment delivered by the reconstituted International Crimes Tribunal.

According to the prosecution, the charges stem from violent incidents on July 19, 2024.

During a police operation that day, six-year-old Musa was critically wounded after being shot; the bullet passed through the child and struck his grandmother, Maya Islam, who later succumbed to her injuries.

Another victim, Md Nadim, was also shot dead during the same incident. In a separate event that day, video footage circulated on social media showing 18-year-old Amir Hossain clinging to the cornice of an under-construction building while two policemen appeared to fire at him.

The legal proceedings included the testimony of 13 witnesses, including the investigation officer.

The prosecution and defense concluded their closing arguments on June 15.

During the hearing, defense counsel Sarwar Jahan Nippon, representing former ASI Chanchal Chandra, argued that his client had no involvement in the incident.

Conversely, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam sought the maximum punishment for all five accused. Following these arguments, the tribunal set June 28 for the verdict.

The trial process began formally on September 18 of last year when the tribunal indicted the five men, following the submission of formal charges by the prosecution on August 7.

While the verdict was initially scheduled for March 4, it was deferred to allow the prosecution to submit additional digital evidence.

Of the five convicts, only Chanchal Chandra is currently in custody, while the other four remain fugitives.
