The investigation arm of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has submitted its preliminary probe report concerning the May 5, 2013, law enforcement operation against a Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh gathering at Dhaka’s Shapla Chattar, naming deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and several other individuals as responsible for the fatalities of approximately 60 people nationwide.
Validating the latest progression to journalists, ICT Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam stated that the document is currently subject to a conclusive assessment and validation phase to guarantee a completely transparent judicial process founded on a meticulously constructed investigative framework.
"The draft report named deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the former inspector general of police, the former director general of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and several others as accuse,” the chief prosecutor announced during a media briefing at his headquarters on Sunday afternoon.
He further noted the fluidity of the current findings, adding, “We are now scrutinising the report. The list of accused may be revised, with names added or dropped, after the verification process is completed. The actual perpetrators should be brought to justice.”
According to Md Aminul Islam, the prosecution was provided with a comprehensive register documenting 61 casualties resulting from the state-led crackdown linked to the cross-country Hefazat-e-Islam demonstrations, with tribunal investigators successfully verifying the identities of 58 victims up to this point.
"Today, we reviewed the draft report with the top leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam. We hope to receive the full report soon," the chief prosecutor remarked.
The high-profile press conference was attended by a prominent delegation of the organization's secretariat, including Hefazat-e-Islam Senior Nayeb-e-Ameer Abdul Hamid, Maulana Mamunul Haque, Mufti Harun Izhar, and Mufti Mir Idris, among various other high-ranking representatives.
