Charges Filed against Hasina, Ex-Army Chief over 2013 Shapla Chattar Crackdown

The prosecution on Monday formally pressed charges against 41 individuals, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and retired army chief General Aziz Ahmed, in connection with the May 5, 2013 law enforcement operation against Hefazat-e-Islam’s rally at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka.

Prosecutor Zahirul Amin, accompanied by Prosecutor Marjina Raihan, submitted the charge sheet to the Registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) around 10:45 am.

A three-member bench of Tribunal-2, led by Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, is set to conduct a hearing on the matter today.

Nine of the accused are presently detained in custody regarding the case.

They include former minister Dr. Dipu Moni, former state minister for home affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, retired major general Ziaul Ahsan, former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Haque, former deputy inspector general Mollah Nazrul Islam, Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee advisory board president Shahriar Kabir, former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal, alongside journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu.

Prosecution details state that 58 individuals lost their lives across four separate locations, including Dhaka, surrounding the Hefazat-e-Islam rally on May 5, 2013.

Investigators have formally identified 32 victims in Dhaka, 20 in Narayanganj, five in Chattogram, and one in Cumilla.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain issued the directive after law enforcement personnel presented Maksuda in court upon the conclusion of her one-day police remand, requesting her continued detention until the investigation concludes. The court had granted a one-day remand for Maksuda and a four-day remand for Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam on September 21. Law enforcement recovered Mariam's body hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat 203, situated on the third floor of Building 5 at NAM Bhaban, on the evening of September 20, leading to the immediate detention of the Satkhira-4 lawmaker and his first wife. Following the incident, Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah, lodged a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on the morning of September 21, naming Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam, and Mariam's maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman as accused parties for allegedly abetting the suicide.
