Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, significant changes have been made in the country's sports sector. Several key positions have been reshuffled, and the names of various clubs and stadiums have been altered. The latest addition to this list is the Bangabandhu National Stadium, which will now be known simply as the National Stadium.
On Saturday (February 15), the National Sports Council (NSC)—the governing authority of the stadium located in Paltan, Dhaka—issued an official directive confirming the name change. The NSC stated that the decision was made with appropriate approval and would take effect immediately.
Originally built in 1954, the stadium was first known as Dhaka Stadium before being renamed Bongobondhu National Stadium during the tenure of the Awami League government. With the change in administration, the stadium's name has once again been updated.
Previously, the venue hosted multiple sports events, but in recent years, it has been used exclusively for football. The stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 36,000.
This is not the first instance of stadium renaming. Earlier, on November 14, 2024, the National Sports Council renamed three mini stadiums across the country:
- Kushtia District Stadium, formerly Kushtia Sheikh Kamal Stadium, is now called Shahid Abrar Fahad Stadium.
- Tangail District Stadium has been renamed Shahid Maruf Stadium, Tangail.
- The sports ground in front of the Bangladesh National Parliament in Dhaka has been renamed Shahid Farhan Faiyaz Sports Ground.
