The High Court has stayed the Gazipur City Corporation election.
A two member bench led by Justice Naima Haidar delivered the order on Sunday after concluding the hearing of a writ petition challenging the legality of including six mouzas of Shimulia union of Savar under the city corporation.
Shimulia union council chairman ABM Azharul Islam Suruj filed the writ petition.
The writ said, inclusion of six mouzas was made in 2013. The election of Shimulia union council was held in 2016. These six mouzas were under Shimulia at the time of election. Azharul Islam was elected chairman in the election. Recently these six mouzas were included under Gazipur City Corporation. The writ was filed challenging the legality of inclusion of these six mouzas.
The Election Commission declared the election schedule on March 31. The last date of nomination papers submission was April 12 and last date of withdrawal was April 23. According to the election schedule the election for the post of Mayor, general and reserved Councilors was scheduled to hold on May 15.
After declaring the schedule the mayor and councilor candidates of Gazipur City Corporation were active in the election campaign. Gazipur city was specially resonant with the election campaign of ruling Awami League mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam and BNP candidate Hasan Sarkar.
Gazipur City Corporation is formed with 57 general and 19 reserved wards. The number of voters there is 11 lakh 64 thousand 425.
