DU to celebrate 104th founding anniversary today

East Bengal and Assam Province was created on 16 October 1905 with Dhaka as its capital. As a result of the partition of Bengal, education in East Bengal improved greatly. But on November 1, 1911, through a declaration in the Delhi Durbar, the partition of Bengal was canceled on December 12. There were 19 degree colleges in undivided Bengal. 9 of them in East Bengal. However, the people of East Bengal didn't think that the number was enough.

The tide of education that came to East Bengal as a result of the partition of Bengal, soon demanded the establishment of a university in Dhaka. The cancellation of the partition of Bengal ended that possibility. On January 21, 1912, the Viceroy of India Lord Hardinge visited Dhaka. During his visit, some leading people of Dhaka met him and told him about their losses due to the cancellation of the partition of Bengal. In order to compensate for this loss, he announced that he would recommend to the government about the establishment of a university in Dhaka.

The activities of Dhaka University started on July 1, 1921 in light of the recommendations of the Nathan Commission. This resulted in the creation of the desired middle class intellectual in East Bengal. Those who subsequently guided the nation in the transition period of the country including state formation and freedom struggle. Today, on July 1 (Monday), Dhaka University has completed 103 years and entered its 104th year.

As always, the day will be celebrated with a colorful programme. This year the theme of the day is 'Higher Education for Skill Development of Young Generation'. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. S. M. Maksud Kamal will formally inaugurate various programs as the chief guest of the University Day at Payra Chatwar in front of the student-teacher center at 10 am.

According to the programme, teachers, students, officials and employees from all the halls and hostels of the university will gather at Smriti Chirantan Chatwar with a procession at 9:30 am. From there, the vice-chancellor, professors, teachers, students, alumni, officers and employees of the university will come to Payra Chatwar in front of the Student-Teacher Center with a colorful procession led by A. S. M. Maqsud Kamal. In the opening ceremony at 10 am, hoisting of the national flag, flying of pigeons, balloons and festoons, cake cutting to observe and teachers and students of the music department will perform the theme song and opening music of the university.

After the opening ceremony, a discussion meeting will be held at 10:30 am in the Student-Teacher Center auditorium on the theme of the University Day, 'Higher Education for Skill Development of Young Generation'. Speaker of the National Assembly will present the main article as the chief guest. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. S. M. Maksud Kamal, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Muhammad Samad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Sitesh Chandra Bachar and Treasurer Professor Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, university senate and syndicate members, deans of various faculties, principals of various halls, chairmen of various departments along with teachers-students, alumni and officers-employees will participate in the discussion meeting.

on the occasion of Dhaka University Day on Monday (July 1) from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, the entrance to the university from Neelkhet and Fuller Road will be closed for vehicular traffic. DU authorities have requested everyone to use alternative roads at this time.

On the occasion of the day, various important buildings and roads including Vice-Chancellor Building, Curzon Hall, Kala Bhaban and Student-Teacher Center have been illuminated. Besides, construction of archways and decoration of road dividers and islands have been done at various entrances of the university.

All classes will be closed from 8 am to 1 pm on the occasion of Dhaka University Day. But the exam will be held as usual.
