14 Embassies' concern over nationwide violence, letter to FM

The embassies and high commissions of 14 countries in Dhaka have expressed deep concern over the loss of life and destruction caused by the nationwide violence surrounding quota reform movement. They wrote to Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud, urged all concerned parties to find a sustainable solution to the ongoing crisis.

The letter sent to the foreign minister last Wednesday was signed by the embassies of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Australia and the European Union (EU).

In addition to resolving the crisis, accountability for the use of excessive force by law and order forces in the conflict is ensured, the detained persons are tried in due process and the Internet is requested to be fully operational across the country as soon as possible.

Under the circumstances, the embassies and high commissions addressed the Foreign Minister on the issue of the briefing of foreign diplomats in Dhaka on July 21 and said, "We appreciate the indication that you have given to ensure the accountability of the officers of the law and order forces for the excessive use of force in the discussion with the heads of missions.

The letter also said that it is important to ensure the due process of those detained in the last few days. It is also important to uphold human rights including freedom of expression, right of assembly.

The high commissions have commented that curfew and internet disconnection around the movement have had a far-reaching impact on the lives of all citizens. According to them, the communication of Bangladesh with the missions as well as business at home and abroad is being severely damaged due to the internet connection not being fully operational.
